#5: SYNTHESIS

ASK A QUESTION:
EQ: How can we use technology and information literacy for developing Synthesis skills?
OR HANGOUT WITH US:

Sara Lefever

Students must organize and apply the results of the information problem-solving effort.  Students will be able to:

  • Organize information.

  • Create and present a product using information effectively.

Students will organize information from multiple sources by using word processing, graphic organizer, database management, spreadsheets and desktop publishing software to create text documents or by using presentation software to create multimedia productions.

Students will distribute information by publishing to the World Wide Web, using email, or by presenting their printed or

electronic publications.

5.1 Organize information from multiple sources

Ask: How can I put all of the information together to present what I have learned?

  • Will you create text documents by using word processing, graphic organizer, database management, spreadsheets or desktop publishing software?

  • Will you create multimedia productions using presentation software such as wevideo?

Presentation Options

Some teachers give you freedom in how you present what you have learned about your research topic. Just remember that whatever format you use, you must include all of the substantial information necessary to prove your thesis. Even if you write a play and produce it as a way of presenting your research project, you need to go through all of the steps of the research process. Most teachers aren't fooled by glitz. They want to see substance in the form of the knowledge you have gained from the project and what kind of thinking you have done to show that you really understand it.

That said, here is a list of some alternative ways to present your project, other than the traditional paper. Some of them may need to be combined with others to make a complete project. If you are taking the initiative to create an alternative format, be smart and have the format approved by your teacher in advance.

5.2 Present the result

Ask: How is the information best presented?

1. What presentation format does my assignment require? (paper, poster, oral presentation, etc.)

  • Go back and review your assignment sheet to be sure of what is required.

  • If you have a choice of some different formats, what did you decide earlier?

  • If you have complete freedom and didn't make a decision yet, look at Alternative Formats to Present Information.

2. What materials do I need in order to put together my presentation?

  • Bring all of your notes, images, disks, artifacts, etc., together into one place.

  • Have all of the tools you need to put it together; paper and pencil, computer disk, poster board, etc.

  • Work at a place where you can spread out and concentrate.

3. Give yourself the time you need to make a rough draft, edit it and make a final copy before the work is due.
